Proud to announce ‘Project Alchemy’ through Black Summer Bushfire Recovery grant

Rebus Theatre is the proud recipient of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grant. The $870,000 grant will see a community-led arts recovery program established across five local government areas including QPRC, Eurobodalla, Bega, East Gippsland and the ACT.

  Rebus Playback Ensemble is looking for members!

We are asking members of our Rebus Family if they would like to join the Rebus Playback Theatre Ensemble. For now, we are just asking for Expressions of Interest. Depending on how many people are interested, we may also hold auditions, or some other selection process.

Back to Back Theatre bring disability theatre to The Playhouse!

Our friends at Back to Back Theatre in Geelong are bringing their show 'The Shadow Whose Prey the Hunter Becomes' to Canberra this May 11-13 at The Playhouse. Weaving a narrative through human rights, sexual politics, and the projected dominance of artificial intelligence, this new work is a sly theatrical revelation inspired by mistakes, mis-readings, mis-leadings and misunderstanding.

Face to face classes suspended until Feb 28th 2022

After consultation with the disability sector, Rebus' Disability Advisory Group, our participants, their carers, and families, the Rebus Board has made the difficult decision to delay the commencement of face-to-face lessons until the week of the 28 February 2022.

Enrol now for our ‘Systems of Sanity’ program in 2022

A ground-breaking theatre project asking the hard questions about mental health and the mental health system, for anyone with lived experience of mental ill-health, including people who aren’t sure if they exactly fit that definition, or aren’t comfortable with that language. Directed by Rebus Artistic Director Robin Davidson and assistant director Joel Swadling, Systems of Sanity uses theatre games, exercises and techniques to explore different ways of thinking and communicating about mental health, mental illness, and the mental health system, with the option of being in a performance.

Happy International Day of People with Disability! Today we celebrate all the talented, tenacious, spirited, and downright awesome people with disability in the Rebus family! From our administrative staff, to our board, to our program participants, to the casts, directors and technical crews of our main stage shows, people with disability are the life blood of this organisation and we wouldn't have it any other way!

Help us support mental health of LGBTQIA+ young people!

Stigma and discrimination against LGBTQIA+ young people remain significant problems, and young people who identify as LGBTQIA+ are at greater risk of mental health issues and bullying. While there are services that provide one-on-one counselling for LGBTQIA + young people, there are limited avenues in Canberra for them to meet each other and form informal support networks, and to express themselves in a safe and supportive environment.

Rebus takes home a Canberra Critics Circle award!

Rebus would like to extend our deepest thanks Canberra Critics Circle for honouring our work throughout 2021 with an award on Tuesday at the 31st Annual ACT Arts Awards. The 30 year-old Canberra Critics’ Circle is the only such group of critics in Australia that runs across all the major art forms, not just performing arts, and has always always resisted making awards in “best-of” categories, preferring only to differentiate between major art form genres in their award categories. The circle changes each year depending on who is writing or broadcasting on the arts in Canberra.

This year, the NMA invite you to become part of Momentous– the Museum’s award-winning online digital exhibition. Rebus classes will remain on Zoom for the rest of 2021.

Rebus has made the difficult decision not to return to face-to-face classes in 2021.   While this was a difficult decision, the Board and Management Team decided it would be safest for Rebus to observe any ‘community transmission fall out’ that may arise from current easing of restrictions, without putting our participants at further risk, many of whom are classified as highly vulnerable to the virus. Protecting the safety of our participants and staff is paramount to the organisation.
