Thoughts from the Artistic Director

"For me, the artist's role is to reflect and respond to the world and community around them. When I landed in Canberra a year ago, it became apparent that here, in Canberra, the nation and the world is reflected in this city. It's the nation's capital, but it's more than that. This sense of the world existing in Canberra has been the case for thousands of years. Before colonisation the Ngunnawal, Ngambri, and other clans would gather here on land that is now submerged under the man made Lake Burley Griffith. 

Since arriving here I've become acutely aware of what we're all going through in this world at this point in time. In particular, the disintegration of the community and the growing distance between the citizens and the government. Not only that but we are coming to terms with the transformation of our role in society from worker/consumer to data point and AI target. 

It’s easy to lose oneself.  It’s easy to lose hope. But this is where art has a role. To create work that brings us back to ourselves and back to one another. To create spaces where people can listen, question, imagine and connect.  To remind us that each moment has infinite possibilities. That true freedom exists in being present in the here and now. So we at Rebus Theatre invite you to embrace the transformative power of art and reimagine what is and what can be."
