Wakemab
A major First Nations-led dance theatre work by Naygayiw Gigi Dance Troupe.
About

Hailing from the Suy Baydham Clan of Saibai Island, the legendary story of Wakemab unfolds through traditional Torres Strait Islander dance, song and language, woven with contemporary theatre.
Performed primarily in Kalaw Kawaw Ya, it honours Elders, Sea Country and cultural law while confronting the realities of climate change and rising seas.
A work of cultural continuity, connecting the knowledge of Elders with the next generation of Torres Strait Islander artists. Premiering in Cairns in 2026, with national touring and a companion documentary in development.
