Outside the Square #2

Art Competition & Exhibition

Think & create ‘Outside the Square’ using waste and recycled materials for the 2nd incarnation of The Queanbeyan Hive’s ‘Outside The Square’ exhibition themed ‘Recycled in Art’
13-28 October 2023 – Exhibition opening Friday 13 October 6-8pm @ The Hive Queanbeyan

Registrations to take part are open, and final artworks must be delivered to the Hive on 8 October. For further information, key dates and registration go to: https://events.humanitix.com/outside-the-square-2

In the lead-up to this exhibition there will be a free workshop facilitated by Courtenay Trinder and Helen Ferguson.  Saturday 16 September from 10am-4pm. Registration is essential. Participants will walk away from the workshop with new skills and a new perspective about what waste is, and what can be art.

“Everything can be beautiful, treasured and can tell a story – you just need to look a little deeper and think Outside the Square” says Helen Ferguson.

Registrations for the workshop can be made here!

Last year, the inaugural Outside the Square competition had a ‘Hive’ theme and attracted 72 Hexagon shaped works of art which created a buzz within Queanbeyan during the annual Council-run arts trail.  This year the theme is ‘Recycled in Art’ and it is an opportunity for community groups, schools and artists to explore the topic of our waste materials, which usually end up in landfill. The aim is to breathe new life into old, discarded objects and reimagine them into art.

The competition will become a feature of this year’s Queanbeyan Palerang Arts Trail in October. Entries will be exhibited at the Queanbeyan Hive, making this a great opportunity for artists to have their work seen by the public and to be part of the conversations around this growing issue.

The competition will be judged by a public vote in a People’s choice competition. Prizes are proudly sponsored by The Queanbeyan Council’s Cultural Arts Grant scheme.

OPEN (18+) 1st Prize $800/2nd Prize $300/3rd prize $200
YOUTH (12-17 YEARS) $200
JUNIOR ( 7–11 YEARS) $100

‘Outside the Square’ will be run this year as part of Project Alchemy, a series of cross-disciplinary arts projects cultivating community connection across south-east Australia. The project is facilitated by Canberra-based Rebus Theatre and involves artists from Bega Valley Shire, Eurobodalla Shire, East Gippsland, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, and the ACT.

The theme for this years exhibition has flowed from another project I coordinated as part of Project Alchemy,” says Helen Ferguson. “For World Environment Day this year, we screened Bob Brown’s Biopic The Giants as a fundraising event in Queanbeyan, as well as launching an exhibition by Dennis Mortimer called Silent Canary, still on show in The Queanbeyan Hive Gallery. As Project Alchemy became possible thanks to funding from the Australian Government for the Black Summer Bushfire Grant Program, it felt appropriate to explore through creativity – the impacts that we, as humans, are having on our planet. Not to get too heavy and sad, but to come together and have fun and create some extraordinary works.”

Project Alchemy is made possible by the Australian Government through the Black Summer Bushfire Grants program. Rebus is also supported by the ACT Government and Ainslie & Gorman Arts Centres.
